Breeders Crown Champions Headline Matron Entries
The Matron Stakes for three-year-olds are set for Thursday, Nov. 7 with some of the sports biggest names set to compete at Dover Downs, including three Breeders Crown champions.
The $146,050 USD three-year-old filly trot will go as the evening's sixth race, with Breeders Crown champion Allegiant headling along with runner-up and Kentucky Filly Futurity champ R Melina. Allegiant will leave from post five with Scott Zeron listed for trainer Linda Toscano, while R Melina will start from post eight with Todd McCarthy driving for conditioner John Butenschoen.
Highland Kismet headlines the $152,800 USD colt trot after the gelded son of Father Patrick finished a fast-closing fourth in the Breeders Crown in his last outing. Trained by Mark Etsell, Highland Kismet will be looking for his ninth victory in his 17th outing this season from post two with U.S. Hall of Famer Tim Tetrick listed to drive.
Sir Pinocchio (post one), winner of five of his last six pari-mutuel outings including the New York Sire Stakes final at Yonkers Raceway, could prove to be the main threat to the Goodtimes champ. Ed Hart trains the son of Mets Hall who has banked over $770,000 this season. Jason Bartlett gets the call to drive for Hart.
The 10th race on the card is the $116,500 USD filly pace, headlined by two-time Breeders Crown champion My Girl EJ. The Ron Burke trainee was parked to the half before going on to win the Breeders Crown in her last outing in 1:49.3 as the betting favourite to push her career bankroll beyond $1.7 million. My Girl EJ will leave from post five with Dexter Dunn scheduled to be in the bike.
The $178,100 USD Hap Hansen Memorial for three-year-old colt and gelding pacers is slated for race 12 and will feature a battle between Breeders Crown champion Mirage Hanover and Little Brown Jug and Adios winner Captain Albano.
Mirage Hanover (post one; pictured above) has won three straight since finishing second to Captain Albano in the Little Brown Jug final, including a 1:46.3 career-best effort in the Tattersalls Pace at The Red Mile before sweeping the Breeders Crown elim and final, all with driver Dexter Dunn in the bike for trainer Jake Leamon.
Captain Albano (post five) has won nine of 15 on the season, banking just shy of $1.2 million this season and enters off a third-place effort after cutting the mile in the Breeders Crown. Trained by Noel Daley, the colt will have regular reinsman Todd McCarthy in the bike.
The 15-race card is slated to get underway with a first post time of 4:30 p.m.
