Preferred Victor And Hot-Handed Henry In Saturday Spotlight
Driver Trevor Henry won five of the first six races on the Saturday night, Oct. 26 card at Woodbine Mohawk Park before Brett MacDonald engineered a 12-1 upset from post 10 with Saulsbrook Victor in the $36,000 Preferred Handicap Pace.
Overlooked from the outside post in Saturday night's seventh race feature, Saulsbrook Victor upset last week's Preferred winner Fortify (Tyler Borth) when he took over the lead at the :55 half-mile mark and fought off the pocket-popping favourite in a :27.1 final frame to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:50 flat. American History (Dale Spence) stormed home from the backfield on the far outside to nab third-place.
A back-to-back sub-1:49 winner in September, Saulsbrook Victor entered Saturday's contest off a third-place finish in the Preferred a week ago. He returned $26.80 to his backers at the betting windows.
Trained by MacDonald's father Ron, Saulsbrook Victory earned his seventh victory of the season from 26 starts and lifted his annual income to $181,660. With his 27th career win, the six-year-old Source Of Pride-Atlanta Girl gelding went over the $600,000 mark in lifetime earnings.
MacDonald shares ownership of the winner with Brent MacLennan of Charlottetown, P.E.I.
The 11-race card started with Henry scoring a natural hat trick in rein to the Chantal Mitchell-trained Wallace Hartley ($6.70), Wildcat Star ($2.90) from the Timothy Gillespie stable and Momas Son Byrne ($4.30), conditioned by Carmen Auciello. The Arthur, Ont. reinsman then won the fifth and sixth races with Zebs Krafty ($5.50) for trainer Chris Rogers and Sometime Somewhere ($8.50) for the Brett Lester barn.
