Good Omen Takes Another Pinkney Stakes Title

Good Omen winning at Truro Raceway

A Phil Pinkney Memorial Stakes winner last year during his Truro Raceway award-winning freshman campaign, Good Omen returned to claim the sophomore stakes title on Sunday, Oct. 20.

Good Omen capped off the afternoon of racing at Truro Raceway by defeating the favoured Jack Boswall in the $26,900 Pinkney Stakes for trainer/driver Paul Langille.

Reassurance (Myle Heffernan) scooted out to a quick two-length lead with the 1-2 favourite Jack Boswall (David Dowling) parked and pressing to the quarter in :27. Jack Boswell took over the top spot into the turn and led the field to the half in :56.4 at which point Langille made his move with 6-5 second choice Good Omen.

After following in fifth through the first half, Langille and Good Omen launched a first-over attack to gain the upper hand through the next turn. They cleared to command into the backstretch and tried to gain some separation down the straighaway to three-quaters in 1:25.2, but Jack Boswall kept pace with the leader and sprang back into action in the stretch only to come up three-quarters of a length short as Good Omen held on for the 1:55.4 victory. Reassurance held on for third over Swordfromthestone (Ernie Laffin) nearly five lengths behind.

A homebred for Rosanna Langille, co-owned by Ellie Driscoll, the gelded son of Betterthancheddar and Paulas Promise has won eight of his 18 career starts while banking $38,271, including three victories and just over $22,000 this year.

Good Omen returned $4.50 to his backers at the betting windows and combined with Malignity, who paid $4.30 to win the race prior, for a Paul Langille stable sweep of the late Daily Double.

Malignity, Truro's top male sophomore pacer last season, was also back in the spotlight as he made up an early deficit of nearly a dozen lengths and avoided a backstretch breaker en route to a 1:55.1 victory in the $2,500 Winners Over Handicap. Bettor On Than Off (Jamie Ramsay) overtook popular pacesetter American Risk (David Dowling) from the pocket with a quarter-mile to go and finished one length behind the late-closing winner. Malignity, a four-year-old Malicious-Lady Kelleigh Anne gelding, is owned by Debbie Francis, Rosanne Langille and Chantel Langille.

Paul Langille also opened the 10-race card a winner, driving the maiden-breaking two-year-old filly Oh Pretty Blaise to top a 1-2 finish for the Danny Romo stable.
