Kenogami Coco Uses Bold Move To Defeat Quebec Trotters
With a bold, three-wide move near the three-quarters mark, Kenogami Coco looped the field in winning the $10,000 feature trot on Sunday, Oct. 20 at Hippodrome 3R.
In the afternoon's seventh race for Quebec-owned older horses, Rose Run Why Not (Pascal Berube) left from the inside post with Lorenzo (Francis Picard) getting the two-hole trip as they went to the opening quarter-mile in :29.
Only For Justice (Stephane Brosseau) then moved first-over with favourite Kenogami Coco and driver Robert Shepherd second-over as Rose Run Why Not went by the half-mile in :59.1.
In the backstretch, Shepherd swung Kenogami Coco three-wide at the three-quarters in 1:28.2 and they were able to clear Only For Justice by the top of the stretch then collar Rose Run Why Not en route to a 1-1/2-length triumph in 2:00. Rose Run Why Not held for second with Prince Of Sussex (Sylvain Fontaine) coming on for third.
The win was just the second of the season in 13 starts for Kenogami Coco. The seven-year-old Wheeling N Dealin-Profound Wisdom gelding is trained by Isabelle Darveau for owners Marie-Claude Reid, Jean-Francois Reid and Marie Menard. Jean-Francois Reid bred the trotter, who has won 21 races and more than $270,000 in purses lifetime. Kenogami Coco paid $4.80 to win.
Shepherd had the hot hands on Sunday at 3R, scoring a driving quadruple, including a pair of winners for trainer Jean Louis Laflamme. It was the third time Shepherd has hit a grand slam at 3R this season.
Live harness racing resumes at 3R next Sunday, Oct. 27 with first race post time at 12 noon.
