Saulsbrook Big Dog Tops London Classic Yearling Sale
Saulsbrook Big Dog was the top dog of the third annual London Classic Yearling Sale, bringing the highest bid of the two-day auction during the closing session held on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the Western Fair District Agriplex in London, Ont.
Saulsbrook Big Dog, Hip 156, was the overall sale topper with a bid of $150,000. Jack Darling of Cambridge, Ont. purchased the colt sired by his world champion Bulldog Hanover out of the Real Artist mare Atlanta Girl. Saulsbrook Big Dog has six siblings that are winners of more than $100,000, including Mohawk Free-For-All pacer Saulsbrook Victor ($584,385 - 1:48.1s); Saulsbrook Jessie ($327,691 - 1:52.3f) and Saulsbrook Peach ($254,658 - 1:51.4f), both Preferred winners on the Ontario circuit; and multiple Maritime stakes champion and 2013 P.E.I. Horse of the Year Saulsbrook Alana ($174,857 - 1:53.4h). The colt was consigned by Princeton Farms.
Six other yearlings sold for six-figure price tags during the sale's second session on Wednesday, including HP Fashionista, Hip 208, who was purchased for $135,000 by Benoit Baillargeon of Guelph, Ont. Consigned by Erinwood Equine, the Muscle Mass filly is out of Fashion Goddess, a career winner of more than $100,000 and full sister to Grand Circuit stakes winner Fashion Athena. HP Fashionista is a half sibling to Ontario Sires Stakes winner HP Extra Ice ($211,263 - 1:53.2s).
Rounding out the top five highest priced yearlings of day two were a trio selling for $110,000.
The first was Century Merlot, Hip 140. Douglas Paul of Wilmington, Delaware, co-breeder as M And L of Delaware with consignor Century Springs Farms, was the winning bidder of the Cattlewash-Lady Jake filly, who is half-sister to Ontario Sires Stakes winner Betalady ($334,588 - 1:50.3f).
HP Imagine, Hip 173, was the next bought by Marcel Barrieau of Cambridge, Ont. from the Erinwood Equine consignment. The Green Manalishi S filly is out of Coupe De L'Avenir champion Canaco Runner. HP Imagine's half siblings include Ontario Sires Stakes Super Final winner HP Titania Runner ($448,441 - 1:54.4s) and Trophee Des Eleveurs champion HP Felicity ($122,246 - 1:59h).
TH Feel My Mass, Hip 209, also sold for $110,000 with Millar Farms of Stouffville, Ont. acquiring the Muscle Mass-Feel Invincible AS colt from the Preferred Equine Marketing consignment. He is the second foal from his Ohio stakes winning dam, who is a half-sister to three winners of more than $250,000, including The Lionking AS, Triathlon AS and Touchdown AS.
Other yearlings with six-figure bids were fillies Mimosa Seelster (Cattlewash-Mellow Yellow), Hip 158 consigned by Seelster Farms and bought by John Lamers of Mount Brydges, Ont., and JS Iamthatspecial (Muscle Mass-I Am Special), Hip 235 consigned by Twinbrook Farms and sold to Keith Coulter of Mono, Ont. Both sold for $100,000.
D A Bodacious, a Cattlewash-Vivid Shine colt from the Dean and Ashley Wilson consignment, topped three six-figure yearlings to go through the sale ring during the opening day session on Tuesday, selling as Hip 98 for $140,000 to Bill Donovan of Delray Beach, Florida,
A total of 246 yearlings were sold at this year's London Classic Yearling Sale over the course of two days for $7,015,000. The average price was $28,516, up approximately 6.86 per cent from last year's average.
Trotting fillies led the way with an average price of $33,720 from 53 sold followed by trotting colts with 51 averaging $31,020.
Muscle Mass was the leading sire with his offspring averaging $53,556 from 19 yearlings sold. Leading the way for pacing stallions, 12 offspring from the first crop of Bulldog Hanover averaged $43,083.
