Card Shortened In Season Finale At Connell Park

Harness racing at Connell Park Raceway in Woodstock, N.B.

Officials with Horse Racing New Brunswick were forced to cancel the final card of the season on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Connell Park Raceway in Woodstock, N.B. due to unsafe track conditions.

The first race of the card was contested with the starting gate causing interference to multiple horses. Before the second race, officials indicated that the starting gate unable to safely navigate the conditions prompting a cancellation, noting the card would not be rescheduled and that cheques would be divided among the horses entered.

That single dash created a tie atop the trainers' standings for the 2024 season at Connell Park as Slightly Twisted ($5.20) and driver Stephen Trites navigated around the starting car from post five to prevail in 2:10.1. That tally provided trainer Charlie Miles with his sixth win of the meet, lifting him into a tie with Wayne Watson for top trainer honours and out of a tie with Ellen Stevenson and Weldon Briggs, each with five.

On the driving side, Gilles Barrieau had this title locked up before the card. His 15 wins easily topped Todd Trites' nine, with Colin Decourcey, Myles Heffernan, Stephen Trites and Wayne Watson in a four-way tie for third with five victories.
