Rani Hanover Tops Lexington Selected Opening Session

The 2024 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale got underway on Monday (Sept. 30) evening and the daughter of Walner and multiple Grand Circuit stakes winner Ramona Hill, Rani Hanover, caught the attention of everyone with an eye-popping price tag of $1.25 million ($925,000 USD). The bid set a record as an all-time high of a yearling filly at auction in North America.

Selling as Hip 15, Rani Hanover was purchased by Kenneth Jacobs of Balwinsville, New York. Hanover Shoe Farms, Inc. consigned the first foal out of the 2020 Hambletonian winner Ramona Hill (1:50.1 - $1,511,401). 

Hip 83 Going Viral yielded the second highest bid with a price tag of $878,378 ($650,000 USD) for Andrew Harris, acting as agent for William Pollock of Allentown, NJ. Cameo Hills Farm consigned the daughter of Chapter Seven - Check Out Trixie. She is a full sister to Instagram Model (1:53 - $561,808).

Hip 106 Ice Fall was also purchased by Harris, agent for Pollock, for a $844,595 ($625,000 USD) bid. The son of Walner - Ice Attraction was consigned by Preferred Equine, Inc. He is a half-brother to Slip Sliding Away (1:53.2 - $219,974).

Hip 95 Muffin Queen was consigned by Hunterton Sales Agency, Inc. and bought by Anderson/Leblanc/Fielding/Pryde of St. Thomas, Ont. for $743,243 ($550,000 USD). The filly is a daughter of Tactical Landing and the first foal out of stakes winner Love Muffin whose family includes Hambletonian Oaks champions Fashion Schooner and Broadway Schooner.

Hip 75 Stealing Banksy garnered a $641,892 ($475,000 USD) bid from Marcus Melander of New Egypt, New Jersey. Concord Stud Farm consigned the daughter of Chapter Seven - White Cheetah. She is a full sister to Variegated (1:56.3 - $304,066) and Sevecheetah (1:56.3 - $246,967).

In total, 117 yearlings went through the ring on opening night for total sales of $30,127,027 ($22,294,000 USD) with an average ticket price of $257,496 ($190,547 USD). Seventy-three colts sold with an average bid of $228,916 ($169,398 USD) while 44 fillies sold with average price of $300,338 ($222,250 USD).

Last year's sale saw 121 yearlings go through the ring on opening night for total sales of $22,222,000 USD and an average sales price of $183,653 USD. This year's gross was at a 0.32 per cent increase while the average was up 3.75 per cent.

The sale will continue on Tuesday through Thursday with 1 p.m. sessions and wrap up on Friday night at 7 p.m.
