MacDonald Takes Half The Card At Mohawk
James MacDonald won half of the 10 carded races at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Friday evening, Sept. 20, including the $20,000 Pop-Up Series final with Wildriverbumblebee.
As the gate drew away, MacDonald idled from post nine with the Julie Walker student before deciding to press onward. The field rounded the turn stacked double wide with Wildriverbumblebee caught on the outside following the cover of favoured Delightful Leader (Doug McNair). The field passed the quarter in :26.3 and Delightful Leader settled in on the lead inside, leaving Wildriverbumblebee to brave the mile without ever seeing the pylons. After the half in :55.4 and three-quarters in 1:24.1, Wildriverbumblebee showed his grit and continued home to win by a head over the favourite in 1:51.2. Control The Power (Trevor Henry) finished third.
Wildriverbumblebee is a 10-year-old gelded son of Sportswriter and the Mach Three mare Alcor Semalu. He won his fifth race of the year and his 25th career victory. In 99 starts, he boasts $270,610 earned for breeder/owner Dr. John Bradbury. As the 6-1 upset victor, Wildriverbumblebee returned $13.20 to win.
Since arriving to the Campbellville oval, Keystone Doral has won three straight with MacDonald aboard, adding to two previous wins to make five wins in a row.
On Friday, the gelding set a new lifetime mark in the claiming pace worth a $12,000 purse for his royal flush. MacDonald was back in the bike as they took post seven as the bettors' choice in the field of eight. MacDonald sent him straight to the top on a diagonal beeline and they accepted the role as the pacesetter.
Controlling the timer with marks in :27.1, :56.1, and 1:23.4, Keystone Doral never faced an anxious moment, rolling home to win by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:51.2. Mikron (Sylvain Filion) finished second while Manhawk (Bob McClure) completed the show ticket.
Gerard Demers trains the four-year-old Heston Blue Chip - Keystone Dawn gelding, who he co-owns with Sylvain Caron. The triumph was the seventh win of the year for Keystone Doral and his ninth career tally. In 48 starts, he has banked $51,638. He paid $4.10 to win.
MacDonald also won with Yoda Queen ($10.40) in 1:50.2, Firstofanera ($3.70) in 1:52, and Point Breeze ($5.80) in 1:51 to complete his five-bagger.
Trevor Henry and Up Joeys Credit ($7.40) took the $12,000 Pop Up Series Consolation by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:50.3 for trainer and owner Jacob Roberts.
