Toscano Girl Leads Five Winners For Rooney At Leamington
Driver Garrett Rooney ruled the day at Leamington on Sunday (Sept. 15), winning half of the 10-race card along with the $5,000 Preferred 4 Trot aboard Toscano Girl.
Leaving from the outside post six, Rooney got Toscano Girl away in fourth early while Zack To The Max (driven by Andy Moore) led to the quarter in :28.4. After the pace slowed to the half in 1:00.1, Shouldaknownbetter (Anthony Hamlin) popped to pocket and engaged the leader at three-quarters in 1:30.1 while Toscano Girl inherited the pocket heading into the final turn.
Turning for home, Zack To The Max came under attack as a five-across battle to the wire developed in the lane. Toscano Girl slipped off of the pylons from the pocket before trotting to the wire a neck clear of a surging Duke Deo (Nicholas Steward) in 2:01.2. Hot Fudge Sunday (Alfred Carroll) recovered from an early break to rally for third.
Trained by Cameron McQueen, Toscano Girl has won seven of 25 on the year while banking $27,748. The five-year-old daughter of Southwind Toscano-I Like Jesse is owned by D T O Racing and has earned $128,275 lifetime.
The win was one of two on the day for the combination of Rooney and McQueen, winning the fourth race with Leavinwithasmile. Rooney's other wins on the day came with State Of Treasure for trainer Cassidy Schneider, Marilyn for trainer David Bain and Azucar Pipedream for Thomas Hamm.
Driver Robert Doyle notched a hat-trick on the card, sweeping the last three races. Doyle was also the winning trainer on two of those victories.
