Wrap And A Hooey Secures Hiawatha Upset
Sent off as the longest shot on the board, Wrap And A Hooey prevailed in the $6,000 Preferred 3 Trot on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Hiawatha Horse Park.
A seven-horse field was scratched down to a field of six in the Saturday Sarnia feature, with Marvin Hagler (Mark MacQuarrie) getting the bulk of the public support. That trotter sat off the speed as Spun From Magic (Lorne House) set the tempo on top through fractions of :27.4, :58.4 and 1:28. Wrap And A Hooey followed along loosely in the pocket at odds of 21-1 for driver Andy Moore, but the trotter found another gear once the plugs were pulled around the far turn.
Marvin Hagler's three-wide bid at the three-quarter mark didn't fire, leaving room for Wrap And A Hooey to vacate the pocket and challenge with an eighth to go. Spun From Magic was asked down the lane as Wrap And A Hooey came to him, but fell just a neck short as Wrap And A Hooey tripped the timer in 1:58.1. Petro Angel (Scott Wray) rallied to complete the triactor.
Owned by trainer Greg Price along with Dominic De Santis of Windsor and Tom Jacobs of Kingsville, Ont., Wrap And A Hooey (Dontyouforgetit - Flanery Hall) picked up career win no. 27 and lifted his career bankroll to $154,972. He returned $44.40 on a $2 win ticket.
Arisaig didn't provide a large win payout for his supporters in the seventh race, but in finishing second for Scott Wray he returned a whopping $265.60 on a $2 place ticket.
