Stash The Cookies Dominates Century Downs Distaffers
Alberta's reigning Champion Aged Mare ruled again. Stash The Cookies was a wire-to-wire winner in the final $25,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace of the Century Downs meet on Friday, Aug. 30.
Stash The Cookies ended the Calgary meet, which comes to a close on Saturday, with three consecutive wins in the top distaff class for trainer John Chappell and owner Derek Gilbert of Brandon, Man.
With Dave Kelly picking up the catch-drive for the end-of-month edition of the Preferred with a bolstered purse of $25,000, Stash The Cookies fronted the field of nine distaffers through fractions of :27.2, :56.1 and 1:24 en route to the 1:52.4 victory. If Only Id Known (Mike Hennessy) closed inside through the stretch to best the pocket-popping Grey Sea (Tyler Redwood) for the runner-up honours after gaining clearance following a failed first-over bid from Outlaw Sharktastic (Nathan Sobey).
Sent off as the 2-5 favourite, Stash The Cookies paid $2.80 to win.
The eight-year-old Sunfire Blue Chip-Saucy B mare, who put together a previous hat trick of wins from May to June in the Mares Preferred class at Century Downs, has won six of her eight starts this year while earning $55,125. A career winner of 36 races, she now boasts a total bankroll of $368,484.
