Schneider And Rooney Lead Hiawatha Winners
Hiawatha Horse Park's leading trainer Cassidy Schneider and top driver Garrett Rooney continued to rack up the wins on Saturday evening in Sarnia, Ont.
Schneider scored a training triple on the 10-race card to take sole ownership of the top spot in the track's seasonal standings as her local win count climbed to 18 and she moved out of a tie with Lindsey Kerr. With 67 wins overall this year, the 2023 Future Star Award-winning horsewoman from Arthur, Ont. ranks among the top 10 trainers in all of Canada.
Sweeping half of Saturday's races, Rooney teamed up with a pair of Schneider's winning trainees, driving claiming mare pacer Sound Bite Hanover ($2.90) and the stable's recently re-acquired pacing gelding Sir A ($5.80). The other successful Schneider starter was the maiden-breaking sophomore pacing colt Laser ($19), driven by Lorne House.
Rooney completed his five-win night with the Stewart McQueen-trained Northern Spy ($3), Livin Large ($8.90) from the George Robinson stable and Fear The Shadow ($4.20) for trainer Darryl Laver.
Rooney's win count at the meet now stands at 49, more than half his nearest competitor in the driver standings. The Iona, Ont. reinsman is in the midst of his third consecutive million-dollar season and has won a total of 216 races in 2024, ranking third best in the nation.
