Hawaiiancaviar 'Lei-d' Over Foes
Parked the opening quarter and pressured once he got the lead, Hawaiiancaviar still had little trouble fashioning a daylight lead and cruising home in Monday’s opening leg of the Sir Caviar Trot at The Meadows
The series is named for Sir Caviar, the track record-holder for older gelding trotters.
Once he made the front for Brian Zendt, Hawaiiancaviar was challenged by Bob And Bobby, who continued to dog the leader for the next quarter-mile. But Hawaiiancaviar was up to the task, drawing off to down the pocket-sitting Mans Treasure by 6-3/4 lengths in 1:58.2. Bob And Bobby gamely saved show.
Bill Zendt trains Hawaiiancaviar, an SJs Caviar-Hawaiian Rose gelding, for Shanamphilaniklou Inc of Pittsburgh, PA.
Blokbuster Hanover and Hoorayforvacation also captured $15,000 divisions in the series for three-year-old colt and gelding trotters.
In the $22,500 Filly & Mare Preferred Handicap Trot, Trotslikethewind made it three straight despite a parked-out first quarter, demolishing the field in 1:54.1 for Tony Hall and owner/trainer Andy Rickert. The first-over Engamer Nordc Star was second, 4-1/4 lengths back, with Ashlees Dream third.
With the victory, the seven-year-old daughter of Pegasus Spur-Familiar Goal soared over $200,000 in career earnings.
Brett Miller drove three winners on the 15-race card.
