Cowboy Up

Ross Curran

Coming from humble beginnings in Smiths Falls, Ontario, and driving mainly on the Eastern Ontario fair circuit, the late Ross Curran would become a leading driver at Rideau Carleton, Connaught Park, Richelieu Park, and, eventually, on the Ontario Jockey Club tracks as well.

More than 40 years after his career concluded prematurely, Curran — known as ‘The Cowboy’ due to his ability to handle rambunctious horses — will join a number of his contemporaries in the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.

TROT Magazine found a handful of Curran’s old friends and family, and asked them to share a few stories about The Cowboy.
