Smooth Lou Stomps In Summerside
Former Gold Cup and Saucer champion Smooth Lou was back to winning form on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 4 at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
The Prince County oval hosted 12 dashes with Smooth Lou going all the way in the $2,750 finale for trainer/driver Corey MacPherson and owner Triple S Equine of Newton, Ont. The 2021 Gold Cup and Saucer champion pounced from post two to lay down a :27.2 opener followed by splits of :56.3 and 1:24.4. The final time was 1:53.3 with Howmac Charmer (David Dowling) second and Bacononabiscuit (Adam Merner) third.
Woodmere Denny went all the way in the $3,050 race 11 feature in line to Dale Spence for his wife, owner/trainer MacKenzie Spence, in 1:54.4. The son of Rollwithitharry was a 2-3/4-length winner over Starship Glyde (Dowling) and Howmac Maximus (Damian MacLellan).
Brookdale Johnny (Paul Langille) remains undefeated on P.E.I., after winning his third straight on the Sunday card. The Phil Sizer trainee stopped the clock in 1:56 for owners Doug Polley Sr., and Doug Polley Jr., of Amherst, N.S.
Live harness racing continues on Thursday evening at Red Shores Charlottetown with a 6 p.m. opening post time.
The Gold Cup & Saucer nomination deadline for horses is Monday at 3 p.m. Atlantic (2 p.m. Eastern) in the race office, which can be reached by calling 902-629-6634. The official Gold Cup & Saucer press conference will be Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in the Red Shores grandstand.
