MacKenzie Celebrates Training Milestone At Clinton

Paul MacKenzie

Veteran horseman Paul MacKenzie reached a career milestone on Sunday afternoon, July 28 with a sweep of a Pop-Up Series moving his training career win total to 1,000.

With just two training starts on the 10-race card, MacKenzie won them both to reach the milestone mark. His perfect pair took the two $5,000 divisions of a Pop-Up Trotting Series for $9,500 claimers.

After guiding his veteran trotter Steel Reserve ($2.90) to a wire-to-wire victory in 2:03 in the first division, MacKenzie made the winning mid-race move with five-year-old trotter Built To Last ($2.70) to take the lead in the second divison and drove away to win by 10-3/4 lengths in 2:01.3 for the milestone moment.

MacKenzie, 63, started his driving and training career in his native P.E.I. before moving to Ontario in the mid-1980s where he has been a mainstay on the province's B track circuit since. A regular catch-driver, he has driven winners of more than 9,200 races and $55 million in purses while training his own stable, which has earned in excess of $5.5 million in purses.
