Rooney Wins Five, Shouldaknownbetter Knows Best At Dresden
Driver Garrett Rooney put on a show steering five winners on the 10-race Sunday, July 14 card at Dresden Raceway, with three of those wins coming in the bike for trainer Cameron McQueen. Additionally, Shouldaknownbetter teamed up with driver Anthony Hamlin to take the featured $5,200 Preferred 3 Trot.
Rooney kicked off the Sunday card with a victory aboard William Ross for trainer Michael Rogers in the opener, before securing victory in the third with Something Royal for trainer McQueen. Rooney gave Something Royal the second-over trip before soaring to a 2:00.4 victory to best the field of $8,000 claiming pacing mares by 1-1/2 lengths.
After winning the fourth race with Hawk In Flight for trainer Bernard Desmond, Rooney and McQueen teamed up to take the late double. Big Mach N dominated the field of $8,000 claiming pacers in the ninth, scoring a front-end six-length victory in 1:57.2 over Phone In (Nicholas Steward).
Rooney used similar front-stepping tactics to score with Journalistic in the finale. After working to the lead at the quarter pole, Journalistic proved to be a credible favourite, pacing away from the field by 2-1/4 lengths on the line in 1:57.3 over Jays N Tigers (Alfie Carroll). The victory was the fourth straight of the season for Journalistic, who is now an 11-time winner in 2024 through 28 seasonal outings.
Earlier on the card, Shouldaknownbetter proved he knew best in taking the Preferred 3 Trot. Leaving from post four, Shouldaknownbetter and Anthony Hamlin had to work hard to get to the lead, pushing by Dustylane Thunder (Jonathan Hahn) after being three-deep on the first turn to reach the quarter first in :28.4. After clearing, Shouldaknownbetter had things his way to the halfway point in :58.4 before Monteverdi (Nicholas Steward) surged first-over to challenge the leader at three-quarters in 1:29.3. On the final turn, Monteverdi put his neck in front before briefly jumping it off turning for home. Shouldaknownbetter inherited the lead once more before trotting home to victory a half-length clear in 1:59.4 over a surging Workinitonbroadway (Donald Rankin). Monteverdi was able to regain stride and round out the trifecta in third.
The victory was the second consecutive and fifth of the season in 21 starts for Shouldaknownbetter. Owned and trained by Michael Hamlin, the six-year-old gelded son of Deep Chip-Lexis Electra has now banked $129,081 for his career.
