Chapvious Provides Fireworks In Buffalo NYSS
Though a day early, Chapvious provided the Fourth Of July fireworks in the $148,219 New York Sire Stakes for the two-year-old filly trotters at Buffalo Raceway on Wednesday, July 3 as she broke the track record with a three-length victory over Devious Babe in 1:58.2.
The heavily backed Chapvious ($2.10) easily beat the previous mark of 1:59 established by Amal Hall on July 11, 2018.
Smoke Show, appearing in the NYSS after a victory in the Excelsior Series on June 25 in her only lifetime start, aggressively fired out for the lead with DWs Lady Diva and Chapvious tagging along behind.
With fractions of :29.4, :59.1 and 1:29.1, Chapvious (Jason Bartlett) brushed toward the lead turning for home and disposed of Smoke Show. Meanwhile, Devious Babe (Tyler Miller) charged hard in the lane but had no shot in beating Chapvious as a :29 last quarter proved to be the final dagger. Smoke Show (Jim Morrill Jr.) held on for third place.
The victory was the second straight win in as many career starts for Chapvious (Devious Man-Chaperess), who is owned by the Purple Haze Stables LLC and trained by George Ducharme. The huge payday increased her seasonal earnings to $125,137.
Driver Tyler Buter swept both $27,397 divisions of the Excelsior Series in similar fashion with come from behind victories.
In the first race, Inn Of The Stars (Chapter Seven-Mets Inn) came from fourth place at the three-quarter pole and uncorked a :29.1 final panel to get past Carishah Marie by a head in 2:03. Inn Of The Stars paid $8.50 for the win.
The other division saw the favoured Michelon's Titan (E L Titan-Royal Melbourne) enjoy a journey from fourth place through the opening half before going to work. Michelons Titan ($3.50) went first over approaching the final marker and easily went on to defeat Boost (Claude Huckabone III) by 3-1/4 lengths in 2:01.1.
In the $14,247 Class A-Open Handicapped Pace for the fillies and mares, Shooting Brooke (Joseph Chindano Jr.) rallied but then had to hold back a late push from Marathon Mary (Drew Monti) to collect the $7.90 in 1:55. The favoured Summer Slash (Ray Fisher Jr.) arrived in time for the show position.
Racing will continue on Friday, July 5 at 2:30 p.m. with an 11-race card to be presented.
