Svanstedt Freshmen Sweep New York Sire Stakes
Two-year-old trotting colts and geldings as part of the New York Sire Stakes (NYSS) were featured on Monday afternoon, June 24 at Saratoga Casino Hotel.
Trainer/driver Ake Svanstedt swept the two $100,000+ NYSS divisions with the debuting freshman trotters Mr Mouton (pictured above) and Gangsta Talk.
Mr Mouton, a colt by Chapter Seven out of the Father Patrick mare Burberry, made his lifetime debut off a winning qualifier at the Meadowlands. Svanstedt moved Mr Mouton out to the early lead on Monday and the freshman held firm every step of the way before reporting home in 1:57.3 for the 1-1/4-length victory. Super Chapter (Dexter Dunn) rode the coattails of the winner throughout the mile before finishing second while Karinchak (Mark MacDonald) earned the show spot in the fastest Sire Stakes of the day. A $140,000 yearling purchase from the Lexington Selected Sale, Mr Mouton is owned by Knutsson Trotting Inc., Little E Llc, Stolz Geiger and Jorgen Sparredal Inc.
Svanstedt doubled up when Gangsta Talk sprung the upset in his NYSS division. The first-time starter drew post seven in a seven-horse stakes try and powered up to the lead in the early going before going coast-to-coast in 1:58.4 while dismissed at odds of 12-1. The longshot winner held off Global Sensation (Dexter Dunn) and the favoured Civilian Drone (Brett Beckwith) by a head. A $65,000 Lexington yearling, Gangsta Talk is a son of Chapter Seven out of the Muscle Hill mare Gangsta Rat. The colt is owned by Ake Svanstedt Inc., Stable Why Not, Little E Llc and Jorgen Sparredal Inc.
Live harness racing resumes on Saturday night at Saratoga with a 5 p.m. first post.
