Mohawk Headlines Pop Up Series On Tuesday
Three Pop Up Series events headlined the Tuesday (June 11) evening card at Woodbine Mohawk Park with victories taken by Indra, Big Mach N, and Royal Regatta in their respective $8,000 divisions.
With the second leg concluded on Tuesday, the calendar looks ahead to the $15,000 final and $10,000 consolation slated for Tuesday, June 18. The series is offered for $8,000 claiming pacers, both horses and geldings as well as fillies and mares.
With a hefty upset in the first division on the card, Indra posted the swiftest time with the greatest open lengths victory in the Pop Up Series.
Despite 13-1 odds in her division, Indra and Trevor Henry sailed to the top. Henry took the Shayne Barrington student through quarters in :27, :56, and 1:24.3 before opening up to a 5-3/4 length victory in 1:51.4. Timewaitsonnoone (James MacDonald) took second and Italia Seelster (Louis-Philippe Roy) took third.
Indra ($28.60) is owned by Imagine Stable for her second win of the year in 14 starts and her third career win in 25 starts. The four-year-old Big Jim - Sportsonthebeach mare posted a career best performance with the 1:51.4 mile time.
The second division went to Big Mach N and Sylvain Filion with a wire-to-wire victory.
Big Mach N declared himself as the pacesetter for the mile and hit every mark in front as the timer read :28.1, :58, and 1:26.1. He set his sights on home, but Journalistic (Jody Jamieson) pulled from the pocket to give him a challenge down the lane. Despite a :27.4 last quarter effort, Journalistic had to settle for second against Big Mach N, who won by a head in 1:54.2. State Of Play (Travis Cullen) completed the triactor.
Trained by Garry Merner for owner Andrea Leon, Big Mach N ($8.60) won his first race of the year in eight starts. In his career, the Mach Three - Outback Girl 11-year-old has made 38 trips to the winner's circle from 154 starts.
Royal Regatta (pictured above) capped off the evening Pop Up series action with a triumph in 1:53.3 by 2-1/4 lengths.
James MacDonald piloted the Richard Moreau student as they took command of the field after an opening quarter in :26.4. Controlling the timer with splits in :55.3 and 1:25, the nine-year-old Mcardle - Mary O Mel gelding used a last quarter in :28.3 to win. Make It Come True (Louis-Philippe Roy) took second with Malvolio (Jody Jamieson) third.
Royal Regatta ($3.30) has banked $317,155 from 203 career starts with 40 tallies on his resume. This year, the gelding has won 10 times in 18 starts.
