Ken Hughes Passes
Longtime harness racing industry participant Kenneth James 'Ken' Hughes of Stratford, P.E.I. passed away on May 16, 2024 at the age of 71.
He was predeceased by his parents, James "Jim" and Elinor "Ollie" Hughes (Paquet). He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Maureen (Poulton), and his siblings Frances (Harold) Shepherd, Eric, David (Wendy), Paul (Cathy), Jerry, and special uncle Alan (Maureen) Paquet and their children Megan, Matthew, and Jordan. He leaves behind his sons Jason (Amy), Robi (Sharie), and Kurt (Colleen), as well as his treasured grandchildren to whom he was the best "Poppy" ever; Justin, Aidan, Samuel, Simon, Leo, Max, Luke, and Kyla, and great-granddaughter Parker.
Beloved and admired uncle to Robert, Steven, Patrick, Greg, Chad, Amanda, Brandon, Natalie, and Christine.
Kenny started his career at the Prince Edward Hospital in 1972, doing many different jobs along the way while retiring in 2023 as the Director of Environmental Services QEH after 51 years.
He was an active sportsman throughout the years, winning multiple curling championships while a member of the Crossroads Fire Department. He was an active trainer and driver in harness racing until his sons took over his passion while he moved on to golfing three days a week at Brudenell. He loved to golf and banter with his same foursome for many years.
His love of sports was passed on to his eight grandchildren, who he truly adored. He never missed a game or event they were involved in and was so supportive of them all.
He volunteered as a Crossroads firefighter for many years, coached hockey in Sherwood-Parkdale, and baseball in Bunbury. Together with Maureen, he fostered many children, providing a loving home for those in need.
Kenny's loyalty, determination, and selflessness defined his character, but it was his devotion to his wife and family that made him great.
He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
