Riley, Waxman Stables Heating Up At Kawartha
Trainers Tommy Riley and Isaac Waxman were the stars of the 10-race card on Friday, May 24 at Kawartha Downs, as each horseman sent out a trio of winners from their stables.
Riley, Kawartha's 2023 leading trainer, teamed up with defending driving champion Samuel Fillion for his three wins. Riley kicked off the Friday night card with trotter Shadrack Hanover ($3.90) calling all the shots in a 1:55.3 dominant performance to take the opener and then followed up with a 1-2 finish for his stable two races later courtesy of Cortez The Killer ($3) and Shadow Warrior. Blue Katana ($3.90) completed Riley's triple after Isaac Waxman won back-to-back races with Kiera Seelster ($4.80) and High Rolling A ($13.40). Driving his own trainees, Waxman later took the ninth race with repeat winner Beef N Cheddar ($3.30) to tie for top honours on the night.
Riley enjoyed a career-best season last year, with his stable earning a total of 58 wins and $463,430 in purses. He earned 21 of those wins to lead the Kawartha trainer standings over Waxman, who earned 11 of his 97 wins last year at the Fraserville, Ont. oval.
Both trainers had a winner on opening night of the 2024 season last Friday and are tied atop the trainer standings to start the meet.
