Grey Gladiator Wins At Georgian
T Js Mr Lavec and Trevor Jay B reigned supreme in their respective Preferred assignments at Georgian Downs on Tuesday evening, and the Innisfil faithful witnessed a veteran notch the 81st win of his career.
That veteran was none other than Canada's 2005 Horse of the Year, Admirals Express, who stepped to a 1:53.2 score in his $8,000 conditioned assignment.
In customary Grey Gladiator fashion, the 12-year-old son of Admirals Galley played a game of "catch me if you can" with seven rivals. None of them could come close to the Mike Hales trainee, who kicked away to win by more than two lengths for teamster Scott Zeron.
Gary & Laurel Gust along with Cheryl & Ed Sayfie share ownership on the charismatic pacer, who is nearing the $2.1 million mark in lifetime earnings.
T Js Mr Lavec front-stepped his way to a career-best clocking of 1:55.2 in the $13,000 Preferred Trot for trainer/driver Wayne Henry. The four-year-old son of Mr Lavec threw down panels of :28.1, :58.4 and 1:27.3 before rocketing home in :27.4 en route to the 10 3/4-length victory.
Dunmore TKO was second best to the 3-2 favourite. Abundaspin rounded out the top three in the nine-horse affair.
Jim Laverty of Sauble Beach shares ownership on the OSS graduate with Trevor Henry of Arthur, Ontario. It was the trotter's 14 lifetime win, and the lion's share of the purse bumped his career bankroll to $266,646.
Trevor Jay B survived a first-over trip to take home top prize in the $13,000 Preferred Pace for trainer Dave Byron and driver Steve Byron. The seven-year-old son of Gothic Dream dug in late to win by a length in a time of 1:52.3.
Race favourite Ghost Hunter, who laid down splits of :28.1, :56.3 and 1:23.3, had to settle for the runner-up award. Jakes Buddy tagged along to grab the show dough.
The gelding, who was let go at odds of 6-1, has now won five of his 25 starts this season for the partnership of Charles & Maryan Byron, Sit N Go Stables and John Smith. The pacer has stashed away $266,232 in his career.
