Style For A Mile Fronts Mohawk Mares
Dropping in class to the Fillies & Mares Preferred 2 level, Style For A Mile led all the way to win the Friday, March 22 feature on a snowy spring evening at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The outsiders showed early gate speed in the $32,000 third race with Style For A Mile and driver Doug McNair crossing in front of Western Wish (Tyler Jones) in the first turn amid a :27 opening quarter. Style For A Mile continued to lead the field of a half dozen distaffers into a headwind down the backstretch past the half in :56.4 and on to three-quarters in 1:27.1. Down the stretch, Western Wish sought racing room up the inside while Wildcat Star (Trevor Henry) rallied off the cover of a parked-from-the-start Ms Quick Sand (Austin Sorrie), but Style For A Mile held off her rivals on both sides, winning by a half-length in 1:54.2 over the snow covered track. Western Wish settled for second and Wildcat Star finished third.
Style For A Mile paid $6.50 to win as the 2-1 second choice to favoured So Much More (James MacDonald), who got shuffled to the back of the pack heading to the final turn.
Richard Moreau trains the five-year-old Captaintreacherous-Injeanous Style mare for Brad Grant of Milton, Ont. and the Florida-based Odds On Racing. Style For A Mile, who is now two-for-six this year, has won a quarter of her 60 lifetime starts while earning $325,510 in purses.
