Hang On Sloopy Upsets In Fraser Distaff Open
Hang On Sloopy followed the pocket trip to victory in the $12,000 Fillies and Mares Open at Fraser Downs, speeding down the inside and hanging on at the wire to win by a head in the Thursday, March 21 evening feature.
Hang On Sloopy (Tyson Jacoby) charged from the rail among a group of leavers in the feature class. Hotpieceoface (Scott Knight) achieved the early lead and Hang On Sloopy followed in pursuit in second through the opening panel in :27.3. The field continued single file through the half in :57.3. En route to the three-quarters in 1:26.2, the field split in half with Salary (Blaine Chappell) leading the outer charge. The battle, however, continued between Hotpieceoface and the pocket-sitting Hang On Sloopy. Jacoby found room on the inside down the stretch with the Reg Wonnenberg student to bypass the pacesetting Hotpieceoface and win by a head in 1:55.2. Gin Is Better (Clinton Warrington) sprinted down the centre of the track to take third.
Breeders Reg Wonnenberg and Gail Brassington co-own the six-year-old Betterthancheddar-Luvinajiffy mare, who notched her second win in five starts this year. In 87 career outings, Hang On Sloopy has earned $122,027 to go along with 13 victories. She returned $18 as the upset victor at 8-1 odds.
