Sudbury Protest At MPP's Office
“We want answers and we aren't getting any. We've got to raise awareness about what is going on."
Horsemen came into Sudbury on Friday morning with horses, trucks and trailers and parked in front of Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci's office. Members of the racing community are asking for some answers from local government in light of Monday's announcement by the OLG that it plans to end the slots-at-racetracks contract in March 2013.
MacLean owns around 15 of the 29,000 race horses in Ontario. He's concerned for the future of the horses and the racing community.
"The fact is we will be giving away $100,000 worth of horses we have invested in [and] in the barn," MacLean told CBC.
Sudbury Downs' owners have yet to hear from the OLG on the future of the slot operation. Andrew MacIsaac, Sudbury's Director of Operations, said the plan is still to open March 21 for training and start the live season of harness racing on April 21.
