The Equine Disease Communication Centre (EDCC) has reported that a case of equine strangles has been confirmed in two Standardbreds located in Ontario.

Located at a private farm in Wellington County, two broodmares developed signs of Strangles (fever, nasal discharge, enlarged lymph nodes) on Feb. 23 after comingling with horses from other farms. On Feb. 27, samples showed positive for S. equi by bacterial culture.

The owner is working with its veterinarian to control the outbreak.
