Mystic Shadow Upsets In Fraser Preferred
Mystic Shadow rallied late to win the $10,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred at Fraser Downs on Thursday (Feb. 22) evening in upset fashion.
As the car pulled away, Mystic Shadow and Brad Watt retreated back to sixth and the pair maintained their position through an opening panel in :27 and half in :56.3. Sitting six lengths off the lead, Watt waited until he neared the three-quarters in 1:25.4 to make a move. Mystic Shadow popped off the rail and chased down the cover of a fast-moving, favoured Pirate Booty (Terry Kaufman). Mystic Shadow closed the gap on the outside, then swung wide in the stretch to swoop by the group. Finishing in the middle of the track, Mystic Shadow won by three-quarters of a length in 1:55.1. Pacesetting Grey Sea (John Abbott) held on for second and Pirate Booty took the show spot.
Owned by trainer Nelson Craig with Richard Wm. Craig, the seven-year-old Shadow Play-Breathe mare earned her first win of the year in her third attempt and 11th career tally. In 103 trips to the track, Mystic Shadow has banked $106,584. She returned $32 to win as the 15-1 upset victor.
