Southwind Oncore Upsets In Mohawk Preferred Trot
Southwind Oncore made the jump to his career debut in the Preferred Trot on Monday, Jan. 29 at Woodbine Mohawk Park and the Jodie Cullen student stalked the leader from third to win in a blanket finish at the wire, banking the winner's share of the $36,000 purse.
Oney Hall (James MacDonald) designated himself the pacesetter for the mile and handed out panels in :28.1, :57.4 and 1:27. Amigo Volo (Tyler Borth) followed in second throughout the race and Southwind Oncore (Travis Cullen) in third. Down the lane, Cullen and Borth made their moves and the trio of horses raced towards the finish in unison. Down to the wire, Southwind Oncore used a last panel in :27 to win by a nose over Amigo Volo. Oney Hall completed the top three.
Southwind Oncore earned his second win from four starts in 2024 and his ninth career tally from 32 track appearances. Owned by Travis Cullen, the five-year-old gelded son of Muscle Hill and the Credit Winner mare Lima Oh So Sweet moved his career sum to $137,625. Off at 19-1 odds, Southwind Oncore paid $39.90 to win.
Dontpokethedragon (Custard The Dragon-Rummys Command) extended his win streak to six-in-a-row with a 1:53.3 score in a $35,000 claiming handicap pace for trainer Kyle Fellows, driver Tyler Borth and owners Patrick Dillon, Patti Hoskin and Steve McGill. The seven-year-old gelding earned his 39th career victory and moved his career bankroll to $382,640. He returned $3.30 as the bettors' favourite.
