Covered Bridge Tops Mohawk Preferred Pace
Covered Bridge took the track on Saturday (Jan. 13) evening at Woodbine Mohawk Park for the third straight start on Canadian soil in the featured class. After two previous show finishes, the eight-year-old millionaire gelding made his third appearance in the $32,000 Preferred 2 Pace a winning one.
James MacDonald and the Jeffrey Gillis student settled in for the trip in third. After Saulsbrook Victor (Brett MacDonald) set the tempo with an opening panel in :27.1 and half in :53.4, James MacDonald pulled his right line to move Covered Bridge, following a first-over Donttouchmytruck (Doug McNair) en route to the three-quarters in 1:22. The bid by his cover waned and Covered Bridge moved to take command of the field. Covered Bridge achieved the feat in the stretch and used the open track ahead to win by two lengths in 1:51.3. Saulsbrook Victor finished second and Points North (Sylvain Filion) completed the triactor.
Mark Ford owns the son of American Ideal and the Artiscape mare Stonebridge Kisses. From 137 career trips to the track, Covered Bridge has banked a hefty $1,196,820 to go along with his 44th career tally. As the bettors' choice, he paid $3.50 to win.
