John Blancher Passes
After being ill with mesothelioma, longtime harness racing industry participant Vernon “John” Blancher of Sarnia, Ont. passed away peacefully on Dec. 24, 2023, at St. Joseph’s Hospice with family by his side. He was 79.
John was part of a very large family and will be fondly remembered by his six brothers, five sisters and their families.
John loved farming and animals and bought his first farm at Hungry Hollow in 1970. He had a long career as an insulator, working for 45 years as a member of Local 95 Heat and Frost Insulators Union and will be remembered for his dedication and tireless work. Harness racing was also one of his passions and he spent most of his life raising, patiently training and racing standard bred horses and was a lifetime member of OHHA. John devoted his life to helping his family, his friends, his neighbours, and anyone else in need. He was someone people knew they could always count on.
His family will always remember his famous words, "Stay out of trouble."

John will be sadly missed by his wife of 58 years, Lynda Blancher. Predeceased by daughter Margaret “Marnie” Blancher. Cherished father of John Jr. (Melissa), Melissa and Jamie. Very proud grandpa of Brittany, Riley (Caleb), Bryce, Brynn, and Rhett. He will also be missed by his loyal companion Diesel.
Cremation has taken place, and friends and family will be welcomed at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, for visitation from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024, from 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 2:30 p.m.
Sympathy may be expressed through donations to St. Joseph’s Hospice in Sarnia (cheques only at the funeral home please). Arrangements entrusted to Smith Funeral Home.
