Shark Week Returns A Winner At Century
After a month away from the races, Shark Week made his return at Century Mile in the $14,000 Preferred Handicap Pace a winning one on Saturday, Dec. 9 to score his 14th straight victory.
Assigned the outside in the field of five, driver Mike Hennessy, trainer Rod Hennessy and Shark Week continued their record of 'ones' across the board with a gate-to-wire trip. After posting panels in :28.3, :56.2 and 1:24.2, Shark Week found clear sailing home to a 2-1/4-length victory in 1:52.2. Ernesto Delacruz (J.F. Gagne) finished second with Samba Beat (Phil Giesbrecht) third.
Co-owned by his trainer and Lorne Duffield, Shark Week (Vertical Horizon-Shark Gone Bad) is Canada's winningest Standardbred of the year and improved his seasonal tally to 19-0-2 in 23 starts with $134,990 banked. In his career, the five-year-old gelding has earned $334,475 from 39 career victories. He returned $2.60 to win.
Following up a multiple-win Friday night at the track, David Kelly drove three of his trainees to victory to record a hat trick on Saturday evening. He won with Tropical Dragon ($4.20) in 1:56.1, Yru So Sirius ($3.30) in 1:57.1 and Bonus Round ($9.20) in 1:53.2.
