Preferreds Highlight Georgian Card
A Fiesty Affair and Ziggy Wiggy worked out a pair of winning trips in each of their $13,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred events, which highlighted Georgian Downs' Saturday night card.
A Fiesty Affair used off the pace tactics to score in the Fillies & Mares Preferred 2 Pace for trainer Casie Coleman and owner Robert Hamather of Exeter, Ont.
The three-year-old filly, driven by Robert Shepherd, got away seventh while Whos Legacy (Aaron Byron) posted the opening quarter in :26.3. As the favourite, Sentbytheangels (Mike Langdon), took over the lead before the half in :56, A Fiesty Affair tipped out behind Gabrielles Girl (Steve Byron) and Creme Fraiche (Dave Boughton).
Sitting fourth on the outside at the third quarter station in 1:24.1, Shepherd made a three-wide move and the 3-1 second choice kicked it into gear, pacing on for the win in 1:53.1 by one length.
Sentbytheangels stayed for second and Creme Fraiche nabbed the show spot.
A Fiesty Affair picked up his second win of 2008, lifting his seasonal bankroll to $112,756.
In the Fillies & Mares Preferred 2 Trot, Ziggy Wiggy prevailed by over two lengths with Kelly Sheppard in the bike.
The eight-year-old S Js Photo mare settled in fourth as the favourite, Enlighten Me (Steve Byron), took the early lead, posting a :27.4 opening panel. As the field approached the half-mile marker in :57.4, Ziggy Wiggy advanced on the outside, but Enlighten Me pressed on as they passed the three-quarters mark in 1:27.1.
In the stretch, Ziggy Wiggy pulled away from the field for the win in 1:57.1 as the pacesetter faded to fourth. Jtlady Strong (Norm Jones) finished second and Emerald Whisper (Robert Shepherd) was third.
Sheppard trains and co-owns the winner of 29 races and $178,046 in purse earnings with Cliff Sheppard of Dundas, Ont.
