Amigo Volo Wires Mohawk Preferred
Since moving to race on Canadian soil, Amigo Volo finally broke his streak of "second-itis" after winning the $36,000 Preferred Trot from gate-to-wire on Monday (Nov. 6) evening at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Meg Crone took over the conditioning of the six-year-old Father Patrick gelding six starts ago and after a third-place finish to start, Amigo Volo has posted four second-place finishes in a row with a narrowing margin each start. He flipped the script on Monday as he held on to win by his own narrow margin.
Driven by Anthony Haughan, Amigo Volo sprinted from post seven to take the lead. The pair continued on through panels in :27.2, :56.1 and 1:24.2. Near the third quarter pole, Oney Hall (James MacDonald) closed in on the leader and provided a fierce stretch battle against the favourite. Down to the wire, Amigo Volo stuck his head out in front to win in 1:53.1. Oney Hall had to settle for second and Pemberton (Trevor Henry) sprinted in the stretch to grab third.
Amigo Volo is a winner of $2,333,726 from a record of 30-20-11 in 81 starts. Pinske Stables and David Miller co-own the winner. He returned $3.70 win.
