Rey Sweeps Saturday Stakes At The Loop
Saturday, Oct. 21 was quite the day for driver Michel Rey, who scored both stakes victories at The Loop.
For the second week in a row, AK Black Badger stalked stablemate AK Nite Lady throughout a race at The Loop. AK Black Badger came up short a week ago in the $7,671 MSSBA Silk Lace leg, but she delivered in the $12,228 MSSBA Silk Lace final.
Michel Rey positioned AK Black Badger behind AK Nite Lady (Marc Fillion) through fractions of :31, 1:01.4 and 1:32.3. Rey made his move from the pocket around the final turn and powered past the pacesetter in deep stretch for the half-length score in 2:02. Maching Millions (Blake Piwniuk) completed the top trio.
Ak Black Badger (Andreoli Hanover - Honeybadger) picked up her second lifetime victory and earned a new speed badge for Kevin Hildebrandt of St. Malo and Aline Hildebrandt of Roseau River, Man. The filly lifted her lifetime earnings to $16,316.
The co-feature on the Saturday card of harness racing at The Loop was the $11,644 MSSBA Golden Boy Stakes final. Braxtons Boy delivered as the 4-5 choice to provide Rey with a sweep of the main events.
Braxtons Boy powered away from the gate and fronted the field heading to the first quarter and there was nary an anxious moment. After fractions of :31, 1:02 and 1:32.4, Braxtons Boy bounced home in :30.3 to trip the timer in 2:03.2. Irish Luke (Piwniuk) gave futile chase from the pocket to finish second nearly six lengths back with Supa Fast (Dean Rey) not quite living up to his moniker but finishing third nonetheless.
A homebred of trainer Richard Rey and Janet Rey of St. Claude, Man., Braxtons Boy (Whosurboy - Nitrous Force) has compiled a solid 5-4-1 summary from his 11 sophomore starts with $28,386 in purses. He returned $3.60 to his supporters.
The fastest mile of the day came courtesy Aime Hanover ($2.40), a 1:58.1 winner for Team Mason.
Darryl Mason drove the five-year-old son of Betting Line - Allamerican Coed to victory for trainer and co-owner Sherri Mason, establishing a new track record for older pacing geldings. That's his eighth career win to go with $87,502 in earnings.
Chazmichaelmichael held the mark of 1:59 prior to Saturday's card.
P L Jackson ($5.60) and driver Dean Rey needed every inch of Red River racetrack to pick off pacesetter Oriental Express (Michel Rey) in the $8,000 Open Pace. The 10-year-old Mach Three - Kg Katriona stallion won by a quarter length in 2:00.
Trainer Arthur Rey co-owns P L Jackson with Roland Rey of St. Claude. The win his fifth in his last six starts marked the 36th of career and lifted his earnings to $449,163.
