Garry Heffernan Passes
Following his battle with cancer, longtime harness racing industry participant Garry Heffernan of Picton, Ont. passed away at his home, with family at his side, on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023.
Garry was a kind and friendly person who would find a silver lining in every difficult situation and lend a hand to anyone in need. He cared deeply for his family and friends and enjoyed sharing and celebrating their achievements. Standardbred horse racing was his passion as he owned several race horses over the years and always looked forward to his visits to the barn. Playing golf, cards and other activities with his family and friends brought him so much joy which led to some great story telling.
Garry was the son of the late Jeremiah & Mary Magdalene Heffernan (nee Freeburn) and the devoted husband of the late Patricia Heffernan (Williams). Garry was the loving father of Darlene Kennelly, Garry Heffernan, Lionel Heffernan (Angie) and the late Michael Heffernan (Lorrie).
Proud Grandpa to Shannon, Jason, Jenny, Michelle and Kirby. Proud Poppa to Trevor, Melissa, Griffin, Michael, Corey, Ashley and Rachel. Predeceased by his grand-daughter Abigail. A proud Great Grampa to his 13 great-grandchildren.
Garry is survived by his siblings Agnes of Pembroke, Yvonne of Barrie, Jeanette of Belleville, Sharon of Barrie and Carol of Toronto, the late Leona, late Bernice, late Ronald, late Gerald, late Robert, and the late Kathryn. He will be fondly remembered by his friends Paul Megens (Stacey), John Gilbart, Kevin and Tammy Benn and his many nieces, nephews and extended family.
The family thanks the doctors, nurses, PSWs and especially NP Brad Gunn for their support and compassion while caring for Garry.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Garry’s life at the Elks Lodge in Picton on Sunday, Oct. 29 from 12-4 p.m.
Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Garry Heffernan.
