Coastal Holds Off Meadows Open Mares
Coastal threw down a swift 1:21.1 three-quarters and then dug in to hold off a pair of late challengers to preserve the victory -- her third straight -- in Wednesday’s $19,300 Filly & Mare Open Handicap Pace at Hollywood Casino The Meadows.
Sent off at 8-1 despite her recent success, Coastal appeared to be coasting. But when the field turned for home, the four-year-old daughter of Downbytheseaside-Pink Camo had to find more to turn back Dewitt For Josie outside and Darby Hanover in the Lightning Lane. She prevailed for Jeremy Indof in 1:50.2, half a length better than Dewitt For Josie, with Darby Hanover third.
Ron Burke trains Coastal, who now boasts a career bankroll of $271,363, for Burke Racing Stable, J&T Silva Stables, Jason Melillo and Beasty LLC.
Dave Palone piloted three winners on the 13-race card.
Live harness racing at The Meadows continues on Thursday, with first post time set for 12:45 p.m.
