Merner, New Legacy Share Honours At Charlottetown
Adam Merner drove five to victory during the 14-race card on Thursday (July 27) evening at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park, including a win with New Legacy, who remains perfect after two legs in the Fox Group Island Trot Challenge.
Leaving from post two in the $5,300 Fox Group Island Trot Challenge leg, New Legacy got away third. He then went first-over on the outside to track down pacesetter Sailor Blue (Ken Murphy), crossing the wire 1-1/4 lengths the best. The time of the mile was 1:58.2 as Jessiejesorjessica (David Dowling) was second and Sailor Blue hung on for third.
Colin Johnson trains New Legacy for owners Debbie Element, Matt and David Burke and Don MacNeill Jr. as the Father Patrick trotter got his 20th lifetime win.
Merner was the most popular face in the winner’s circle on the night as he clicked with Georgia Thompson in 1:54.4 in race three and Woodmere Rollily (1:56.2) in race 11, both for trainer Melissa Rennie. Oceanview Chip (2:01) was the best in race four for Merner and conditioner William Roloson in the $3,200 All Star Cresting Prospect Trot Series, while Traces Of Purple capped off the night in race 14 in 1:57.2 for trainer Robert Phillips.
The Arsenault Best Cameron Ellis Chartered Professional Accountants Pace in the sixth race had Shes Rockandfame win in her first start back on P.E.I. in 2:00.1 for driver Dowling, trainer Mike Dowling and owners Amy Lakie and Michael Arnold.
Elm Grove Mistress took the $3,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 by a nose in 1:56.2 with Jason Hughes in the bike for trainer Jennifer Doyle, who co-owns the eight-year-old mare with Danny Birt.
Live racing continues Saturday (July 29) evening at 6 p.m. at Red Shores Charlottetown and Sunday (July 30) afternoon at 1 p.m. at Red Shores Summerside.
