Meadowlands Releases Sulky Statistics
By popular request, the Meadowlands Racetrack is now tracking sulky statistics for its players
.
Several weeks ago, the Meadowlands began colour coding sulkies and tracking the information on its live television broadcast. Statistics have been compiled for the past month and will now appear in the live racing program as well.
“The statistics of a certain sulky’s performance is not only good for handicapping in the present, but for the future as well,” said oddsmaker Darin Zoccali, “especially if a driver decides to make a switch to sulky that is out-performing the others.”
Zoccali has also compiled statistics on sulky changes and the performance of horses changing from one bike to the other.
Here are the sulky statistics for the past month at the Meadowlands:

This is a good idea for
This is a good idea for simulcast. A long time ago, a new sulky came out at Greenwood. This new sulky had a single bar or shaft going right over the whole back of the horse.Words fail me as to the name of it. A lot of trainers used it but it was winning so many races that it was cancelled out and no longer used.A safety issue was in the mix as well.
This was about 40 years ago and I know that one trainer was selling them but can't remember who.
If a top driver (Brennan??) goes to a top sulky from a lower one, that's a hint that he may win the race.Or a top trainer could use the top sulky plus the rail position to gain 10-20 lengths on the field.
It is to be hoped that Canada will have these new ones ready for use. It is true that certain horses like certain sulkies better than others.

The sulky you are speaking
The sulky you are speaking of was called "Joe King Single Shaft Sulky" from the 70's. The sulkies that the article refers to at the Meadowlands are also being used at the Ontario tracks as well.
Long Overdue!!
Long Overdue!!
I've had more success with
I've had more success with a good horse pulling a "bad" sulky than I have with a bad horse pulling a "good" sulky other than a Joe King single shaft sulky or the Cheetah sulky.
