Modern Legend's Streak At Seven
Modern Legend front-stepped his way to the winner’s circle Saturday night at Woodbine Racetrack in the second round of the Cam Fella Pacing Series, and in doing so the Dave Drew trainee extended his win streak to seven
.
Itrustyou (Brett Miller) showed early speed off the gate in the first $40,000 dash, clocking a :27.1 opening panel. After a parked-out Lizard King (Chris Christoforou) dropped into the pocket, driver Jack Moiseyev tipped first leg winner Modern Legend off the rail from third.
The four-year-old gelding, who was the 3-5 bettors’ choice, cleared to the lead after passing the half in :55.1 and was strong past the three-quarter marker in 1:23.2.
Modern Legend was untouchable in the stretch, stopping the teletimer in 1:51.4, two and a half lengths ahead of a late-rallying Rock Me Amastreos (Scott Zeron). Red Bugler (Keith Oliver) finished third.
“I can’t predict the future,” said Drew when asked if he thinks the gelding can keep his win streak rolling after the final. “I just always try to get them as ready as we can. He has been feeling good so we will see what the next week brings.”
Drew feels that it is Modern Legend’s love of racing that makes him special.
“He just enjoys it immensely,” said the St. Catharines, Ont. resident, who owns and bred the bay. “When he gets behind the gate, he is full of energy and he stays that way through the race.”
The homebred son of Modern Art-Ruby Cam is five-for-five this year. The 10-time career winner, who swept the Autumn Stakes and Snowshoe Series at Woodbine, has earnings of $85,000 in 2012 and $161,085 lifetime.
Modern Legend paid $3.30 to win.
In the other Cam Fella division, Reibercrombie, a runner-up to Modern Legend in the opening round, scored his second win in seven outings this year for trainer Casie Coleman.
Driver Jody Jamieson and the son of Cheyenne Rei-Abso Skippy sat behind fractions of :27.4, cut by Audreys Dream (Scott Zeron), and :56 and 1:24.1, put up by first leg winner Guns An Roses (Jack Moiseyev).
Reibercrombie advanced first-up from third in the final turn to track down the 8-5 favourite, Guns An Roses, in deep stretch. The five-year-old gelding got under the wire in 1:53.1, one and a half lengths ahead of Mach Wheel (Joe Hudon). Audreys Dream finished third.
“I felt confident at the head of the stretch because Joe [Hudon] was on my back and he was going enough to keep Scott [Zeron] in the two-hole and I knew I had Jack [Moiseyev] measured,” said Jamieson following the victory. “I was real happy with his effort. He left hard and paced hard down the stretch.”
The 17-time career winner has earnings of $47,650 in 2012 and $187,559 lifetime. Coleman and Steve Calhoun of Chatham, Ont. claimed the pacer for $50,000 at Woodbine last November.
Reibercrombie paid $6.20 to win as the third choice.
The $100,000 final, for four- and five-year-old pacers in 2012, who are non-winners of $150,000 lifetime as of midnight December 31, 2011, is scheduled for Saturday, March 10.
