JJ Scarlett Beats The Boys At Inverness
Multiple Maritime stakes winner JJ Scarlett converted off a perfect pocket trip for the first win of her four-year-old campaign on Sunday afternoon competing against Inverness Raceway's top pacers.
Firing first from the middle of the gate for driver Danny Gillis, JJ Scarlett took a tuck behind inside leaver Euchred (Redmond Doucet) as they headed into the first turn of the $1,800 Winners Over Pace. After panels of :28.4, :57.1 and 1:27.4 with the rest of the field gapping the top two, JJ Scarlett popped the pocket and went head-to-head with Euchred into the final turn then forged ahead in deep stretch for the 1:58.1 victory. Last week's winner Windemere Best Man (Zach Mullins) circled three-wide from the back of the five-pack rounding the final turn and got up for second, finishing three-quarters of a length behind the winner and forcing Euchred to settle for third.
A runner-up to Windemere Best Man in her season's debut last week for her new trainer/owner Anthony Beaton, JJ Scarlett was sent off as the 7-5 favourite in Sunday's featured finale and paid $4.90 to win.
The consistent daughter of Tobago Cays has hit the board in 20 of her 30 career starts. An 11-time winner, she has banked nearly $90,000 lifetime.
