Ys Mathis Descends On Summerside
The fastest horse of the season on P.E.I., Ys Mathis, will set his sights on the top prize in the Tuesday evening (June 20) Preferred 2 Pace at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
The first of 13 dashes is scheduled for a 6 p.m. opening post time at the Prince County oval with the $3,600 featured pace lining up in race 12.
Marc Campbell will drive his trainee Ys Mathis from post two fresh off a second-place finish in the Preferred 1 Pace at Red Shores Charlottetown. The six-year-old son of Sportswriter is the quickest horse on the Eastern Seaboard in 2023 by virtue of his 1:51.4 winning trip over Charlottetown in May. Brady Doyle of Stratford, P.E.I. shares ownership of the 17-race winner with Jacinta Campbell of Charlottetown.
Middleton Terror gets the respect of the morning line as the early favourite in the field from post five for trainer-driver David Dowling. The pacer has been consistent in his four-year-old campaign with five wins and four seconds so far in 2023 including winning this class last week.
Atlantic Sires Stakes graduate Stash It Away has post three on the starting gate with Corey MacPherson back in the seat for trainer Kevin MacLean.
Dylan Sam (to be driven by Ken Murphy) will guard the pylons at the start, with Navalny (Adam Merner) leaving from post four and Mantario (Jason Hughes) starting from post six.
The "Backstretch Beat" likes Ys Mathis on top: “Ys Mathis put together the fastest trip of the season winning in 1:51.4 on May 20 in Charlottetown then really did not like the muddy track his next start. Bounced back to pace 1:54 last week and reunites with Campbell tonight so we think the target is on his back as the one to beat.”
Race 6 is in honour of a harness racing mega-fan with the Happy Birthday Albert Nash Pace. Princess Halo (Murphy) is favoured off the rail in the $2,300 event for co-owner and trainer Garth Cole and co-owner Alfred Baglole of Freetown, P.E.I.
