Goddard Gets Georgian Hat Trick
Trainer Mark Goddard collected three victories on the eight-race card at Georgian Downs on Sunday night (June 11).
Goddard’s first win of the night came with a coast-to-coast effort by Esquire (1:58.1 winning mile; $2.70 to win). He then swept the late daily double with wins by Villefranche As (1:57; $4.60) and Zip Me Up (1:58.1; $3.50).
Though early in the meet, Mark Goddard now sits tied for second on the training standings at Georgian Downs with Francis Guillemette and three wins behind current leading trainer Jodie Cullen.
Goddard would’ve batted a thousand at Georgian on Sunday, but only three of his four starters won. Talismano, in rein to Goddard, finished second to his stablemate Zip Me Up in the finale.
Hanging the tack again in 2019 after a 15-year hiatus, Goddard has since posted career-best numbers. His best year came in 2020 with $444,619 earned from 396 starts, and for 2023, he’s currently earned $135,465 in purses from 82 starts to add to his lifetime earnings of $1,566,369.
