Nautical Hanover Nails Billy Clyde In Free For All
Torrid fractions poised Nautical Hanover for a final-quarter assault that proved successful in the final strides of a 1:48.2 mile to take the $54,000 Free For All Pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday night (June 10).
Billy Clyde floated for the lead through a :26.2 first quarter but struggled to take control from a stubborn Allywag Hanover through a :53.3 half. Allywag Hanover eventually relinquished control, leaving Billy Clyde to coast on the helm to three-quarters in 1:21 as challengers began a march along the rim.
Nautical Hanover powered from seventh with Linedrive Hanover in tow to take aim at Billy Clyde in the straight. But Nautical Hanover needed every inch of the long stretch to stick his neck in front of Billy Clyde at the beam. Linedrive Hanover settled for third and 6-5 favourite Allywag Hanover took fourth.
Ben Baillargeon conditions Nautical Hanover, a four-year-old stallion by Captaintreacherous, for owner Richard Berthiaume. He won his 12th race from 45 starts and has now earned $411,917. Nautical Hanover paid $30.90 to win.
