So Frisky Prevails In Grand River Preferred
So Frisky wore down Major League N in a battle of the handicapped favourites in the $11,000 Preferred 2 for pacing mares featured on Friday night at Grand River Raceway.
Sent postward as the 6-5 favourite, So Frisky and driver Colin Kelly got away fifth from their assigned post six while 9-5 second choice Major League N fired to their outside for Ed Hensley and raced three-wide into the opening turn in pursuit of the top spot.
Major League N worked past insiders Heavens Showgirl A (Tyler Moore) and My Only Sunshine (Jason Ryan) by the quarter pole in :28 and fronted the field through a half in :57 while So Frisky started to advance first-up in front of the grandstand then pressed the pacesetter down the backside, drawing on even terms at three-quarters in 1:26.3.
So Frisky gained a short lead on the outside turning for home and outfinished her foe for the 1:55.4 victory, with Major League N fighting on at the inside to finish a game second. Wildcat Delight (Brett MacDonald) got up for third over My Only Sunshine (Jason Ryan) in the battle five lengths behind for show.
Dropping down in competition, So Frisky was sent off as the bettors' choice after competing in the Forest City Pace last time out at The Raceway at Western Fair District, where she faded to fifth in the Grand Circuit race won by two-time O'Brien Award winner So Much More. So Frisky paid $4.50 to win.
A career winner of 35 races and $282,053, the seven-year-old Dali mare earned her sixth win of the season from 19 starts for trainer Anita Ouellette and Luc Ouellette Incorporated.
The win was the third of the night for Kelly.
