Our Lucky Killean Heating Up
Ever since celebrating his 50th lifetime victory on February 13 at The Raceway at the Western Fair District, veteran pacer Our Lucky Killean has been unstoppable at the London half-miler
.
The charismatic performer registered the 52nd win of his career thanks to an impressive 1:57.2 tally in Monday’s $15,500 Preferred for the duo of driver Robert Shepherd and trainer Casie Coleman.
Shepherd got away fifth with Our Lucky Killean, who watched My Man Charley tear through panels of :28, :58.1 and 1:26.4 before giving way. Our Lucky Killean tracked cover behind a first-over Acceptable Risk, and when that foe backed away Our Lucky Killean started to go to work. A :30.1 closing panel is all it took for the 11-year-old son of Camluck-Our Emblem to win by 1-1/4 lengths over My Man Charley in 1:57.2. Mach It Big had traffic woes throughout the mile, but he still came on strong to finish third.
Sent off as the 1-2 favourite for the West Wins Stable of Cambridge, ON, Our Lucky Killean improved this year’s record to 4-0-2 in seven tries while pushing this year’s purse haul to $29,020. The former claimer has potted more than $1.4 million in career earnings.
One race earlier on the 12-race program, Just Crowned front-stepped to a 1:58.1 in the $12,000 Preferred-2 for pacers. The five-year-old son of Artsplace-Princess Justice and driver Trevor Henry sat second to the quarter pole before being ordered to slip to the lead on the way to the half. Just Crowned then led the group through middle intervals of :58.2 and 1:28 before kicking home in :30.1 to stop the teletimer in 1:58.1. Dimes Dividends was next week, with the Monster In Law taking home the dough.
Tony Piroski of Essex, ON owns and trains the 12-time winner, who has now hauled in close to $90,000 in lifetime earnings.
