City Of London Series Continues With Trotters
Trotters took their turn in the City Of London Series on Friday evening (May 12) at The Raceway at Western Fair District with four $8,000 first leg events -- two for the males and a pair for the females.
Trainer/driver Bruce Richardson doubled up in the opening leg with a winner in both divisions.
Like Chaos ($3.10) reclaimed the lead when Acefortyfour Elvis broke stride attempting to clear past the quarter then the three-year-old Lookslikeachpndale gelding took off by 13-1/4 lengths to equal his 1:57.2 lifetime mark taken last time out in the Ontario Sired Spring Series final at Woodbine Mohawk Park. P C Mercury Rising was the best of the rest with Warrawee Yuri edging out Wolinak for third. After going winless in eight starts as a freshman, Like Chaos has won five of his first nine sophomore starts to boost his bankroll to $64,000.
Savannahs Dream ($9) topped a four-filly field, leading all the way in 2:02.3, with early breaker and 1-5 favourite Champagne Bettina recovering to finish second a length behind and Angelic Kt rounding out the top three. The Archangel filly broke through for her first career win in 19 starts.
Richardson shares ownership of both winners with Joseph Coffey, while Peter Irwin also co-owns the filly.
The other series winners were Douglas McCarthy's gelding Oceanview Massey ($2.50) in a new mark of 1:58.1 with Tyler Borth driving for trainer Keith Jones and the streaking filly Cash Deals ($2.90) in 2:00.3 for trainer/driver Mario Baillargeon and Thestable Cash Deals Group.
The City Of London Series is for Ontario-sired trotters and pacers four years old and younger that were non-winners of $10,000 lifetime, as of midnight Feb. 28, 2023.
The series will continue with the second leg for pacers next Wednesday, May 17 while the trotters will be back at it on Friday, May 19. All divisional finals will take place on Friday, May 26.
