Fredericton Grandstand Destroyed In Fire
The open grandstand at the former harness racing track at the New Brunswick Provincial Exhibition grounds in Fredericton was destroyed in a fire over the weekend.
According to a CBC News article, the Fredericton Fire Department responded to reports of the NB Ex fire at 10 p.m. on Sunday, May 7 and were able to extinguish the fire within a few hours and keep it from spreading to the closed grandstand and the main building.
Built approximately two decades ago, the open seating, which was in good shape at the time of the fire, was mostly constructed of wood, with additional wood being stored underneath the structure.
Horses are stabled on site, but there were no injuries reported to animals or people. Attendees of a car show at the NB Ex on Sunday had left the grounds by approximately 6 p.m.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Fredericton Raceway last hosted harness racing on Sept. 8, 2019.
