Ontario Standardbred Tests Positive For Strangles
Trot Insider has learned that a case of equine strangles has been reported in a Standardbred located in Ontario.
On April 8, the 18-year-old gelding located in Hamilton Region developed a severely swollen head with nasal discharge, tachycardia, a swollen leg, had a draining pectoral wound and became recumbent. He was euthanized due to the severity of clinical signs. A swab taken from the nasal discharge was positive for Streptococcus equi subsp equi.
The facility owner is working with their veterinarian to implement biosecurity protocols and voluntary movement restrictions
