Style For A Mile Circles Mohawk Distaffers
Sent postward as the longest shot on the board in Friday night's featured $30,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred 2 Pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park, the Richard Moreau-trained Style For A Mile pulled off the upset as she rallied from last to first in rein to Doug McNair.
While Major League N (Ed Hensley) led the way through fractions of :27.2, :57 and 1:25.1, Style For A Mile trailed the field, which was reduced to five following the weather-related scratch of Parisian Blue Chip, an upset winner in the last edition of the Mares Preferred 2 on Feb. 24.
Springing into action with a :27.2 closing kick amid the snowy conditions, Style For A Mile emerged down the stretch to defeat Major League N by one length in 1:53.2. Need To Breathe (Travis Cullen), the 1-2 favourite, picked off the winner's pylon-skimming stablemate Ahoy (Louis-Philippe Roy) late for third-place.
Moving up in class following a pair of victories last month, Style For A Mile was let go at odds of 8-1 and returned $19.50 to win and $9.40 to place. There was no show wagering.
The four-year-old Captaintreacherous-Injeanous Style mare is now four-for-six with $50,010 banked this year for owners Bottom Line Racing of Boca Raton, Florida and Brad Grant of Milton, Ont. With the win, she improved her lifetime record to 9-3-3 from 24 starts and boosted her bankroll to $161,750.
Moreau completed a training triple on the 12-race card with JKs Rollin Baby ($3.30) and Lock Bridge ($3.60). The 10-time O'Brien Award winner became the first trainer in 2023 to top the million-dollar earnings mark in Canada and pushed his nation-leading win total to 67.
